Subsidized Housing, Various Location, Long Island, NY
Architect: Peter Caradonna Architecture and Planning
Role: Contributed to Construction Documents
When the Long Island based mental health organization, Hands Across Long Island (HALI) approached Peter Caradonna Architects (PCA) to renovate four residences scattered across Mastic Beach and Brentwood it was taken as an opportunity to bring better buildings to those in need. One way HALI works to meet its mission is to provide housing for those who would otherwise have no place to go, It was these values that attracted PCA to HALI and helped facilitate a healthy relationship.
While the scope of work varied for each location the goal of the work completed was to improve the living conditions in all of the homes, some of which were occupied during construction. Some homes needed minor structural repairs and new finishes while others required new mechanical systems and insulation. PCA worked closely with HALI during the bidding process to help select a contractor that was able to perform the work within the allotted budget. Working with the selected contractor ensured all work conformed to codes, design intent, and the mission of HALI while securing a safe and healthy home for those in need.
