After purchasing a new lot on North Country road in St. James, Energy Fitness, a full service health center and gym, wanted to create a place that would house not only their current demand but allow for future expansion and services, such as an office space and café. It was a priority of the client to attain LEED certification and to become a showcase of sustainable features for future projects on Long Island to reference.
The design solution aimed to maximize the use of natural light and energy; primary access to the building leads the occupant directly into a lobby space with access to the reception desk, a childcare facility, and the café. The main floor consists of areas for gym equipment and weight training, while smaller rooms off the central space provide zones for scheduled classes, private sessions and even a place to swim. A large open plan provides adequate space for existing equipment and allows for easy adaptation to new equipment as the industry responds to new knowledge, methods, and technology.
In addition, the large open interior space can open up to the exterior where sports courts provide an area for training and recreation while connecting to nature. These exterior courts can be used independently or in concert with the interior space offering additional flexibility for the client.
The upper level of the fitness center offers private offices and an area for specialized services such as massage therapy, nutrition consultation, or holistic treatment.
The wellness center addresses users' health not only by offering a place to exercise in a variety of ways but to do so in a clean environment open to abundant natural light, fresh air, and the outdoors.
