Manorville Community Ambulance serves one of the largest ambulance districts in the state of New York. They utilize three state of the art Advanced Life Support ambulances and numerous support vehicles. The company responds to approximately 1,200 medical calls for help per year along with numerous assist calls for the Manorville Fire Department. While staffed mostly by volunteers, Manorville Ambulance keeps a paid Advanced Life Support provider on call twenty-four hours a day and a paid Basic Life Support Provider on call Monday through Friday during daytime hours.
In order to help the Ambulance Company continue to provide outstanding service the Town of Brookhaven agreed to provide them with an updated facility. Replacing the existing facility is a new 9,000 square foot facility designed by H2M. The new facility provides expanded facilities for ambulance and apparatus storage, separate areas for paid and volunteer staff as well as a common lounge room. Additionally, a large meeting along the buildings street front provides an area for training classes, presentations, and can be used for community events as well as private events held by the Ambulance Company.
As part of the Town of Brookhaven's own imitative they require all town built buildings to achieve LEED certification. In order to achieve this the building incorporates energy efficiency measures as well as a number of state of the art systems. The building incorporates an energy efficient envelope along with efficient lighting both inside and out. A rooftop solar array, both electric and thermal, combined with a ground source heat pump to reduce the building's energy use by 30% compared to a code built building. To address site issues in the surrounding rural area, previous paving was installed throughout the site to allow all stormwater to drain within the site boundaries. Additionally, all site lighting is dark sky compliant contributing to the LEED v3.0 design. The building opening was celebrated by staff and volunteers on March 2013 to their delight. An energy efficient, comfortable, and healthy building that meets their growing needs is just what they wanted.
